One could argue that Ljubljana, as a contemporary city, is composed of two distinct urban models.

The first is embodied in its compact historic core, where continuity is maintained through the integration of new functions into the existing urban fabric. The second, representing the modern and ever-evolving part of the city, is characterized by a constant state of metamorphosis—one that, driven by a condition of hyper-evolution, necessitates the development of new methodologies to manage rapid growth and flexible organization.

To avoid the emergence of a generic urban identity, it becomes imperative to address the methodology for shaping the contemporary dispersed city.

How does one conceive of an architectural intervention that is not merely a generic residential high-rise, but rather a structure whose presence subtly yet unmistakably marks and transforms the space it inhabits—forever altering its urban narrative?

The project site lies directly along Celovška Road, one of Ljubljana’s primary arterial corridors. Along this axis, a sequence of larger-scale residential and commercial buildings unfolds, interspersed with lower, pavilion-like structures that host public programs. On a more granular scale, the plot is framed by taller residential towers, smaller commercial buildings, and landscaped public space adjacent to the post office.

The proposed building is inserted into an existing void in the urban fabric as a spatial composition of staggered volumes—each distinct, yet collectively forming a cohesive whole. These volumetric shifts are conceived as a response to the surrounding architectural masses and the interstitial voids that constitute the lived urban environment.

The resulting structure creates spatial tension and a perceptual illusion—evoking, in fleeting moments, a sense of weightlessness. As one navigates around and through it, the composition continuously transforms, offering a dynamic architectural experience defined not by fixity, but by movement, perspective, and the passage of time.

The building is inserted into an existing spatial void as a composition of discrete volumes—articulated through subtle shifts, yet forming an inseparable whole. These displacements are conceived as a direct response to the surrounding built fabric and the voids that define the urban realm as a space of habitation.

The resulting form generates a sense of spatial tension, illusion, and a fleeting perception of weightlessness. As one moves through and around the structure, the composition continuously shifts, offering a dynamic architectural experience—an architecture not fixed in a singular reading, but one that unfolds in time, through movement and perception.
